Imagine driving out in the country smelling freshly cut grass, hearing the sounds of farm animals, seeing the horses playing and jumping. So many of us want to unwind and retire out in the country with chickens a huge garden and maybe a horse or two. You will need a place to store your animals and tools for the gardening you will be doing. How about building a large American red barn? The task might seem impossible to pull off but once you have the know-how, you will be storing your animals before you know it.
First plan. Before building any structure it is important to have knowledge of the building codes that are established for your town. These codes inform the builders what is allowed in that area such as the size and utilities that are allowed by the town for a structure. Do you need a building permit? You can gather this information from the Planning Department. You want to check your property and be knowledgeable about rainwater flow, drainage and underground electrical lines. Make sure the area that is chosen has good drainage so the barn won’t flood. You can visit a company to draw up building plans for your barn. Make sure the ground you build on is good and stable.
Second, laying a suitable foundation is important. Cut a square pit that is large enough to fit the dimensions of your plan. Make sure this area is excavated to a depth of six to eight inches. Clear rocks, roots trees, and other debris that is within the site. You want to make sure that the site is level. Dig a footer around your foundation site. It should be the correct depth and width for the specific dice structure that will be placed on the site. You can always find this information on the internet. Place rebar inside this footer area. It should be placed on all four sides of the site. There are tutorials online that show the best way to lay rebar. Trim the rebar to the correct size to match the footing trench. Fill the rebar with crushed stone. Pour the concrete foundation. Make sure the weather is good for this. If it is a very rainy day you might want to opt-out and choose a more dry day. Allow for the concrete foundation to dry.
Third, construct a simple frame with the same dimensions as the blueprint plans. Then you are going to build a series of trusses that will connect the roof and the walls. Install the decking on the roof then lay your roof felt than your sheets for the roofing. Cover the wall frames with wood boards that you can get at the local construction store. Then you can add siding to the boards. Mount the sliding doors in the entrance and my favorite part. Paint the barn red.
