When it comes to getting pregnant, it can be harder than most people think. When faced with the despair of infertility, it seems like EVERYONE has words of wisdom (wives’ tales) to share with you. Although those words of wisdom sound like a sure-fire hit, how do you know which ones are true and which ones are pure folklore?
With infertility being an inability to get pregnant, it’s best to rely solely on your doctor, and not the mistruths behind certain wives’ tales. But out of curiosity, what old wives tales have you heard of? If you’re like most women, you’ve probably heard tons of them. We’re going to take a look at some of the biggest infertility wive’s tales, and believe me… they’re some doozies!
You’ll Have Twins If You Eat Yams While Trying to Conceive
The jury is still out on this theory, but it is said that this theory came from the African village of Igbo-Ora having a high rate of twin births. This village eating lots of yams is the only theory people could come up with?
Well, yams are very healthy and nutritious for the body, but there is no direct link to yams causing women to get pregnant with twins. When experiencing infertility, one thing you can do is lead a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise. Try to avoid anything that could potentially cause you to stress during your time of trying to conceive.
Birth Control Can Delay Pregnancy
For some reason, lots of women have it in their mind that if you’re on birth control for long periods of time, it can delay your conception process. Almost like, however long you were on birth control, that’s how long it will take you to get pregnant.
Ladies, take a deep breath because that’s not true. In fact, it’s been reported that from the moment you stop your birth control, whether it’s the pill or another device, you can expect to ovulate within a few weeks. Now that time frame varies, but birth control won’t delay your conception for three years if you’ve been on birth control for three years.
If You Adopt a Baby, You’ll Have Your Own
This is a doozie of a doozie. For one, that’s not a valid reason to adopt. Adopting a child is not a good luck charm. Secondly, if you were to do this, and happened to get pregnant with your own child, what are you going to do with your adopted child now that you received what you wanted?
This myth is all around a terrible and ridiculous idea, so don’t believe it or do it for this reason. If pregnancy is truly what your heart desires but having a hard time conceiving, you should look into an alternative method of pregnancy with proven results.
There is Only One Position to Conceive
This is also a myth. When you’re trying to conceive everything doesn’t have to be calculated… it can be fun for both of you. Scientifically, the theory to successfully conceiving a child is deep penetration and ejaculation. It doesn’t matter how or where the conception takes place.
Try Not to Think About It
I know this is easier said than done. When you want to have a baby, “baby fever” is what has taken over you. A lot of women have said that when they stopped trying, that’s when they became pregnant. Fact, or coincidence? It could be a little bit of both, but during this journey, just know that you’re not going it alone. Stay strong and just know that there is help and support for you during this process.
