Dr. Ken Hollis is a board-certified general surgeon, having 30 years of experience to bring to the table. His General Surgery Internship as well as residency was completed at KU School of Medicine, after which he completed his post graduate training at MIEMSS (Baltimore’s Shock-Trauma Institute), in order to pursue his passion for trauma and critical care medicine. He returned to Kansas after his training, and joined the KU surgical faculty. He was the director of Trauma and Critical Care Surgery, having broad clinical experience, and putting an emphasis on vascular and chest injuries.
He had a great interest in the field of laparoscopic general surgery, a field which was evolving rapidly, and went to Huston, Texas in order to train and relocate. Also part of his academic record is his B.S. degree in General Science, received from the Washburn University of Topeka. In addition, he went to the University of Kansas, School of Medicine, and graduated with honors in pharmacology.
From doctor to patient
According to Dr. Ken Hollis, after being a general surgeon in private practice for more than 30 years, which required him to spend tens of thousands of hours at the OR table standing up, he ended up progressively developing venous insufficiency as well as terrible varicose veins. He did hundreds of vein strippings the old fashioned way through his career, and the vein doc points out that he was sure he would never submit to it. This led him to seek attention from a vein clinic where he got diagnosed as well as treated with a modern vein treatment. Being thrilled with the results, he started offering the procedure to his patients in order for them to experience the same relief that he did.
About Metro Vein Centers
The vein doc is currently part of the team of doctors of Metro Vein Centers in Texas. Metro Vein Centers was founded by Dr. Ali Meslemani back in 2006, and the organization grew to a total of twelve offices across the states of Texas, New Jersey, Michigan, and New York. When it comes to the treatment of spider veins, varicose veins, as well as other venous conditions, Metro Vein Centers is considered a national leader, using the latest technologies. The team of doctors employs leading-edge diagnostic and treatment options for the condition, such as ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation, and radiofrequency ablation. The procedures are both safe as well as painless, requiring minimum downtime and being covered by most insurance plans. In addition, the doctors will work with the patients in order to determine a personalized treatment plan that fits their needs.
Varicose veins are bulging, swollen, abnormally enlarged veins which protrude from the surface of the skin. Usually, they have the appearance of a twisted rope or cord, being dark purple or blue in color. When veins that are supposed to carry the blood to the heart are weakening and leaking in the wrong direction, blood ends up pooling in the veins, causing them to enlarge. While varicose veins can be unsightly and might not cause severe symptoms, they can be indicative of an underlying disease and can become severe if they are left untreated.
Some of the risk factors are age, blood clots, obesity, pregnancy, muscle weakness, smoking, cancer, a family history of venous insufficiency, and more. The list of symptoms includes swelling of the legs or ankles, itchy legs, weak legs, leg ulcers, pain (which gets worse when standing up), thickening and color changing of the skin on the legs or ankles, tightness in the calves, and more. Metro Vein Centers offer patients the option to schedule a free clinical evaluation for those who show signs of the condition.
